The northern hemisphere is in Spring going into Summer right now, so Korean beauty brands have been releasing more sun protection products, including the product that is subject of this post, sun protection cushions. Sun protection cushions are not foundation cushions. They are not intended to provide any sort of coverage for imperfections. They are for protection from the sun. They’re basically sunscreens applied in the cushion form.
This product is not a new idea, a few different brands have had sun protection cushions for children for a while now. Of the top of my head I think Primera, Mamonde, Belif and The Face Shop have kids sun protection cushions. I think Primera was the first brand to have this product. If you watch The Return of Superman, you may have noticed cute Sarang being their model for this product. So cute! :) I think that sun protection cushions for kids may have been a purposeful and cute way for children to mimic adults applying foundation cushions. But it seems to have come full circle as now we have adult sun protection cushions.
Anyway… after that long intro let’s get into the review. This post is going to be about two sun protection cushions I purchased recently, the Amore Pacific Sun Protection Cushion and the Primera Skin Relief Daily Sun Cushion.
Both cushions have a light creamy formula, like a light sunscreen. As they are sun protection cushions, they don’t provide coverage, but I did find that they both covered pores a little, particularly around my cheek area. Both formulas do leave a slight white cast, which is not surprising because they both physical sunscreens. They both contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are physical sunscreen ingredients that block uv rays. But it’s not so obvious that I look like a ghost. I find it more like applying a CC cream. It tones up and brightens my face a little. The colour correcting, texture and finish remind me a little of the Etude House Magic Any Cushions.
Amore Pacific vs Primera
Amore Pacific cushion:
- SPF 50+PA+++. Physical sunscreen.
- Whitens and clarifies skin. Also meant to protect skin against other harmful environmental factors and dust.
- Semi-matte finish
- Comes in two shades: 01 Natural and 02 Bloom (the Bloom shade leans pink and I think helps brighten dull skin tones)
- Cosmetic perfume scent
- Beautiful gold and white packaging! I personally think it’s the prettiest case out of all the Amore Pacific cushions. The case and refills are compatible with other Amore Pacific brand cushions, except Innisfree.
- KRW 65,000 for 15g x 2
- SPF 33PA++. Physical sunscreen.
- Colour corrects, sunflower sprouts and black soy bean provide extra skincare protection from other environmental attacks on the skin.
- Satin-matte finish. Slightly more glow than the Amore Pacific and feels a little more “sticky”
- Comes in one shade only
- Herbal scent
- The case is the same as the Primera Watery CC Cushion case, except this case is ivory and orange, while that one is blue and white. The case and refills are compatible with other Amore Pacific brand cushions, except Innisfree.
- KRW 25,000 for 15g. Does not come with a refill, but the price reflects this.
How Can I Use Them?
When I started using these cushions, I figured there are a few ways to use them. You can use them by themselves, under foundation or on top of foundation. So I’ve been trying them out in these different ways.
On days when I’m not wearing foundation, I’ve tried these as the sunscreen I put on at the start of the day, plus top up throughout the day, and I’ve also tried it just as a sunscreen I carry around to top up during the day (after having put on my usual sunscreen at the start of the day). They work well both ways. If you use it as your daily sunscreen, I find if you put a good layer on, it works just as well as other non-cushion sunscreens.
Like I said above, the sun cushions do offer a little coverage for pores and tone up like a CC cream. Which is good for those days when I don’t want to wear makeup or just a little concealer. It also makes topping up sunscreen on those days much more convenient and desirable :) And this product is great for those who don’t like wearing much makeup, but want to get in on the cushion craze!
Under foundation, I found it did lighten my foundation a little. This may may be a good or bad thing depending on whether your foundation shade is right for your skin tone at the time. I found it annoying sometimes. And I did also find that the sunscreen can cause the foundation to catch and ball up a bit. Particularly if I have patches of drier skin and/or if I use a less hydrating foundation on top.
On Top of Foundation
On top of foundation, again it also lightens your foundation. Which again can be a good or bad thing, depending on what you think of the shade of your foundation. Though I found applying the sun cushions on top of my foundation throughout the day, can remove the foundation a little. But this isn’t a problem as I can just apply more of my foundation cushion on top. However, if you like to use a powder on top of your foundation, applying this liquid sun protection on top will definitely not work well!
How I Like to Use Them? What Do I Think?
So after trying it out for a a couple of weeks, I found I really like these cushions for concealer only or makeup free days. Like I already said above, it makes applying more sunscreen throughout the day so much easier and so much more enjoyable.
I didn’t like using it under foundation, because of the balling up issues. Particularly with the slightly more sticky Primera formula. And on top of foundations, I found it a hassle to manage around my foundation. I find it easier to top up sunscreen and coverage with my foundation cushion, if I’m wearing foundation already. And I don’t like layering too many things on my face. My skin starts to feel suffocated. Plus I don’t like contaminating my sun cushion sponge and puff with foundation :)
I think this product is great for those makeup free days and for those who wear concealer only or don’t like wearing foundation. But if you like to wear foundation everyday, then this product may not have a place in your routine. For the reasons I said above, sun cushions don’t work as well when used together with foundation, whether on top or under foundation.
Out of the two cushions, even though the value is not as good, I like the Amore Pacific cushion more. Firstly for the over all presentation of the product. The packaging is gorgeous. And also because of higher SPF and the formula’s finish is less sticky on the face, which I prefer.
