Ever since the Lancome cushion foundation came out in Australia early last year, every time I go to Mecca Maxima, Sephora or any other place that sells Lancome, I play around with the testers. But, I always end up deciding not to buy it. I could not bring myself to spend $60 for the cushion, with no refill. With one extra refill it’s $90! But then I saw that this limited edition case was out again in Korea, AND it was cheaper buying from Korea, so I decided to try it :) This set came with the rose petal case (empty) and two refills.
In Korean this cushion is called Blanc Expert Cushion Compact. The Lancome cushion in Australia is called Miracle Cushion. From my playing around with the testers in store, the two seem to be the same thing. Both are made in Korea.
Anyway, here are some pics and thoughts…
The formula feels like a gel cream liquid that is light on the skin, and gives a slightly dewy finish. The texture of the formula reminds me a little of the Skin79 Pink Pumping cushion. The pigments are very fine, but I feel like they are very sparse. I.e. there isn’t much pigment in the formula. When I wipe off the foundation with a face wipe, there isn’t much pigments on the wipe. This accounts for the coverage being very light on first application. To build to medium coverage you need to add a few more layers. Even with more layers, when I wipe it off, there still isn’t much pigments coming off.
I found the formula doesn’t cover pores as well as it covers hyper pigmentation and other blemishes. My nose in particular takes a bit more care to have all the pores covered. After a few hours wear, I found the foundation sunk a little into my pores, and the first areas that lost coverage were the pores on my nose and cheeks. After half the day had gone by, the foundation disappeared from my nose… Not sure what happen there… but I guess it’s not very long lasting or transfers very easily. I can’t remember whether I had to blow my nose because of my allergies. Oil control was only ok. I did get a little more oily than usual, around the t-zone area. But a little blotting fixed that up quickly.
This formula isn’t hydrating enough for winter, so it feels like a formula best for Spring/Autumn months. However, sun protection is only SPF23PA++. Not very high compared to Korean brand cushion’s usual 50+PA+++. But this seems to be a trend in non-Korean brand cushions. YSL and L’Oreal also have under SPF30.
When I bought this from Korea, there was only two shade options. A lighter yellow toned beige and this shade P-02, which I think leans pink toned. But as you can see from the swatch, it isn’t so pink that I can’t wear it. In Australia, there are many more shade options.
The rose petal case is very pretty. The cushion case is made out of light weight plastic that doesn’t feel luxurious, but feels sturdy. There is a full mirror inside.
The cushion sponge is a very loose cellulose sponge. This doesn’t hold the foundation very well. The product slides around quite easily if the cushion isn’t lying completely flat for a prolonged period of time. When I first opened my cushion, a thick layer of the product had settled onto the sticker covering the sponge…
Light gel formula that feels light and comfy
Coverage is quite light
Oil control only ok
Low SPF. Only 23/PA++
Sparse pigments. Not very pigmented.
Doesn’t last very long around pores.
Cushion sponge doesn’t hold product well
Limited shades in Korea (cover version has more shades)
What I Think
I really like the gel cream formula, the feeling of this formula on the skin, the initial finish of the formula, and the tone of the shades. But I feel like this cushion can be better. The coverage and the longevity are the main problems I have with it. And I may not be the only one with the coverage problem, because Lancome came out with a “high coverage” version. This may be the version to try if you want easy medium coverage. I haven’t tried this “high coverage” version, but I it’s available in Korea right now. It’s called the “Lancome Blanc Expert Cushion Compact High Coverage”. I’m hoping the formula is similar, but with higher coverage. The case is also the same, but the cushion looks a little different from pictures. Instead of a sponge, it looks like the cushion is a “tension cushion”, the ones with a net across the opening. Like the Shu Uemura cushion, the Dr. Jart Bounce Beauty Balm or the Missha x Line Friends Tension Blushers. Anyway, so sad this one didn’t work out as well as I’d hoped. But at least it’s still useable on days where I want light coverage.
If anyone tries the high coverage version let me know in the comments how it goes! :)
