Another non-Korean cushion today! Don’t worry, for those who have been waiting, I’m still planning my Korean cushion collection/comparison post. I have so many it’s taking a while. Will probably also do a Korean vs. Non-Korean cushion post as well. Anyway, back to this product. So I was on the way to lunch with my sister the other day and stumbled upon the Givenchy Teint Couture Cushion at Sephora. I was so surprised it was already out in Australia. But I was in such a hurry, so I didn’t really have much time to play around with the product in the store, so I quickly swatched and bought what I thought looked like the best fit for my skin…. what a mistake that was…
The Givenchy’s Teint Couture formulas are meant to be light weight and glide on the skin. And this it does. The creamy gel formula is so light weight and easy to blend. When it sets on the skin, it feels like skin. Your pores are blurred over and you have light to medium coverage, but it doesn’t look like you have makeup on. It’s like you have a new improved layer of skin with better clarity and texture. Basically like it’s name suggests, it’s like you’ve tinted your skin. It’s really beautiful.
Like I already said, the finish is like skin, so it’s not matte or dewy. If I had to put a standard word to it, satin would be the best. Given the finish, I would think this one best for spring/summer and humid weather. In autumn/winter I’m not sure it would provide the best hydration, even though the description says it’s meant to. However, in summer this would be a great formula. It controls oil very well.
Given this formula’s more suitable for summer, it’s disappointing that the SPF is only 10. Yes 10! It’s only SPF10! That is such a low UVB protection factor given the current norm seems to be at least 30, and more usually 50! Plus there is no indication of what the UVA protection factor is….
Ok, but on to the mistake I mentioned in the intro to this post… *SIGH* Ok, so let’s just cut to the chase. The finish of the formula is beautiful. But the formula darkens on the skin. And it darkens a lot. The first swatch picture is about a minute after application. You can see what the shade originally looks like on the left and on the right is the formula starting to darken. The second is a further few minutes. I’m not sure if it’s only this 04 Fresh Beige shade that darkens or whether all the shades darken. But I’d advise that you need to be very careful and spend some time choosing your shade. The shades look very light in the testers. But once it sits on the skin for a minute or so it begins to darken and as it sits on the skin for longer it darkens even more, until around 10 – 15 minutes later, it will be at its darkest. I made the mistake of buying a shade that looks good on first application, but is way too dark for my skin once it settles 15 minutes later. I look like I have fake tan on my face…..
I personally don’t like that it darkens cos like most Asian gals, I always want skin that is lighter than what I have. And I also don’t like that it takes some time to settle to the real shade. I’d prefer not to sit there for 15 minutes waiting for my face to become it’s real shade for the day to complete the rest of my makeup….
Hmm, I think this darkening is ok for those who like to get a tan and want to darken their skin tone. But you need to test the shades really well to make sure it won’t be too dark and ends up the shade you want your skin to be.
Another strange thing is the stinging feeling I get when I apply this. Another product I’m sensitive to?! *sigh*
Givenchy, Givenchy. Oh how disappointing. This product was expensive. But the packaging and presentation was actually disappointing for a luxury product. The box is a plain looking glossy black, made from thin cardboard. And when I opened it, the instruction manual fell out and all that was left inside was the cushion itself. Now I’m not sure what I was expecting. But it all felt rather cheap. Maybe it’s a combo of the box not feeling the most lux, and the cushion not being wrapped in any kind of packaging, but the bear box.
The case itself is a cheap feeling plastic that gets smudgy fingerprints very easily, and the mirror inside doesn’t span the width of the case. That really annoys me. Yeah, that’s a strange cushion foundation thing that I get annoyed at…The only thing I like is the metal plate. This cushion isn’t a sponge cushion, but a metal plate cushion, which I usually get confused about why we call it a cushion… but anyway, metal plates are more hygienic and I really like the metal plate inside, because of the Givenchy logo design on it. Though I don’t really like the fact the puff applicators for metal plate cushions sit right on top of the plate. Sometimes extra product comes out and it soaks into the puff. I’d prefer if metal cushions had a lid plate, like sponge cushions, for the puff applicator to sit on.
The puff applicator is quite soft and lovely. But it’s not thick enough and puffy enough to give good bounce for the best blending.
The cushion doesn’t come with refills. And there aren’t any for sale at the moment. But the cartridge does come out. So I’m thinking there will be refills for sale??
There is 14g of product inside. Which is 1g less than the usual 15g in Korean cushions.
Beautiful natural finish on the skin
Feels light on the skin
Blurs over pores well
Good oil control
Easy to blend creamy gel formula
Formula darkens on the skin. Shades not true to what they look like before application.
Takes a long time for formula to settle to real shade (10-15 min on my skin)
SPF very low. Unknown UVA protection factor
Packaging not very lux
Not great value
Strange slightly stinging feeling on my skin
What I Think
So good and then so bad… the finish was so beautiful. But then I looked like I applied fake tan… I’m really sad this formula darkens. It’s a real deal breaker for me. The finish is beautiful, but I personally prefer a foundation that corrects and brightens my skin. Not darkens my skin. Plus even if I find the “right” shade for me. I.e. I went and swatched again and found the shade that suits me after the formula darkens, I don’t want to sit around waiting for that to happen every day before I finish my makeup… So after all that. I’m sad to say. I don’t like this cushion foundation. It’s just too troublesome firstly in trying to find the right shade and then secondly when applying it and waiting for it to turn its real shade… what an expensive regret ㅠ_ㅠ
